Windows Media Encoder

Until today I had no idea you could download the Windows Media encoder software for free. It’s nice.

I sort of feel guilty for using a single-platform media format. Sadly, Windows Media is just better than Quicktime in a couple of key areas: a) the player b) the encoding software available to me for free. I’ll encode with Quicktime if I have to (e.g. to show video to non-Windows users) but most of the time I’ll be using WMV.

DivX and the other “nice” cross-platform codecs are all great, but too many of the people I share video with are not going to have them installed and I can’t expect them to install them.

Quicktime may as well be a Mac-only format given how badly the player works on Windows.
